“If you stabilize and strengthen the foundation,
the Whole House will Stand Strong.” -J.Dyer

ABOUT US

After spending more than a decade working with at risk youth and families, earning a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University, and, in most recent years, focusing her career on providing psychotherapy to the severally mentally ill, reentry clients, trauma patients, and victims of crime, Janet Dyer began to see a common thread in society; men were not receiving the emotional and mental health support they needed in order to thrive in every area of their lives.  As a result of this, she thought, if men were “expected” to carry the most amount of weight, how could they with the least amount of support?

Stemming from a desire to change this narrative, Janet formed a Men’s Only focus group.  Participants received unbiased emotional support, and were encouraged to express their inner most thoughts and feelings about topics concerning “Black Men” as well as Men in general.  This became the foundational birthplace of Intimate Thoughts of the Black ManTM.  By providing men with a safe place to talk about their life experiences, the focus group grew into support groups, workshops and conferences presentations, to what it has become today, an organization dedicated to supporting, promoting, and elevating Black Men, Families, Children, and their Communities.  Intimate Thoughts of the Black Man’s philosophy is, “if you stabilize and strengthen the foundation, the whole house will stand strong!”

"The Man Behind the Mask"

Abstract:

Men are expected to carry the most amount of weight with the less amount of support, simply because he’s a “Man.”  There’s a societal injustice that lead men to believe that emotional support and masculinity cannot co-exist in a man’s world.  As a result, he bottles up his adverse experiences of lose, abuse, neglect, social and ethnic inequalities, and hides behind the “Mask” he’s been taught to wear.  This workshop will open the dialogue of revealing the Masculine “Man Behind the Mask”; break barriers by challenging social norms and stereotypes that keeps him from the “Support” he “Deserves,” and empower him with tools that leads to the pathway of healing through the powerful dynamics of “Emotional Intelligence”, “Self-Actualizing,” and “Unbiased Emotional Support.”  This workshop is designed to meet him where he is, by accepting where he’s been, “without criticism… without judgment.”
